Owning a small business as a woman is harder.
Owning a small business as a POC is completely unfathomable.
I cannot even begin to imagine how much strength and resilience is required to face the adversity that black business owners face today.
At Patina, our goal has always been to create a diverse and inclusive company, culture and community. We honor and respect those from different backgrounds, races, skin color, sexual orientation or identity and remain committed to being an open and equitable company that stands on the right side of social justice. But we understand that is not enough.
Action speaks louder than intent.
The recent events that have put a magnifying glass on systemic racism that has stood for so long, we know that our actions, all of our actions need to be more deliberate in order to make real change.
Here are the 4 areas in which we are specifically focused on how our small organization can make change. If we, along with other small businesses make these changes the impact would be far reaching. I am looking for other small businesses to align with to make a commitment to reach goals in these 4 areas. Money is power, and we are committing to intentional spending with Black owned companies and M/WBE’s. Last year we spent close to 10% of our annual budget with black-owned businesses, but we can do better. We are working on developing a process and formula to do this in the next few weeks to increase it to at least 15%. Currently, we are actively seeking businesses to replace some of our operations vendors as well as new inventory vendors. If you know of any, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
As we rebuild our organization, we are committed to maintaining a diversity split that is reflective of the current demographics in Brooklyn, and we are specifically looking to add more POC in a place of leadership through new hires and training programs which we will roll out in the next few months with our newly formed Diversity Committee .
We are committed to supporting organizations who drive meaningful change. Patina has aways supported social justice issues though both monetary donations and donations of furniture for fundraising events. This year, we are committed to providing up to $20,000 worth of furniture for events fighting for, and supporting the empowerment of the black community through our Gatherings for Good program. We will be more intentional with the images and the resources we share to ensure they are supportive of black-owned, woman-owned, queer-owned and minority owned, businesses. We know there is more to do, and action speaks louder than words, but this is the framework we are starting with. We are committed to to continuing this discussion with our team and our peers to stand together to make a difference.
